Working with Your Other Half: Lessons from Running a Business Together
Most people start January thinking about fresh starts and healthier habits. Meanwhile, at Pink Fluff HR, we begin the year the same way we always do. With a strong cup of tea, the dog under the desk and the gentle realisation that we have chosen to run a business together as husband and wife.
Some call it brave. Others call it madness.
We call it Monday.
Yet after years of growing Pink Fluff HR side by side, we have learned more about communication, teamwork and navigating tricky situations than any leadership textbook could ever offer. Running a business with your other half is a wonderful mix of laughter, honesty and the occasional moment where one of us raises an eyebrow a little too slowly.
It turns out that the lessons we have learned at home and at work are the same lessons every team can use to build a healthier culture in 2026.
How we ended up working together
It was never part of a grand life plan. It just became obvious that the things we do well as a couple translate beautifully into running a business. Individually we are strong. Together we are annoyingly effective.
Clients often ask how we do it. The short answer is this. We know each other’s strengths and we do not try to be the same person. That single decision removes so much friction in both marriage and business.
Lesson one: Communication really is everything
Working with your partner gives you nowhere to hide. If one of us is avoiding a conversation, the other can spot it instantly. We cannot take shortcuts. We cannot leave things unsaid. Clear language is the only way to survive the breakfast table and the boardroom.
It works exactly the same with teams. Difficult conversations do not get easier with time. Silence fills the gaps with assumptions. People feel more secure when they know where they stand. It sounds simple but most workplace issues start with someone not saying what needed to be said.
Lesson two: Boundaries make relationships stronger
We have hard rules.
- Work talk ends at certain times.
- Dinner is not a meeting.
- And nobody is allowed to discuss policies while brushing their teeth.
These boundaries protect the relationship and the business. In workplaces, boundaries do the same. They give people clarity. They help prevent burnout. They keep emotions and expectations realistic. Healthy boundaries are not restrictive they are protective.
Lesson three: Recognise strengths, do not duplicate them
Running Pink Fluff HR works because we bring different strengths. If we tried to do the same things in the same way, the business would fall flat. Instead we lean into what each of us is naturally good at.
Teams thrive when leaders do the same. You do not build high performance by cloning people. You build it by valuing what makes each person excellent.
Lesson four: Honest disagreements can be productive
Disagreeing at home is one thing. Disagreeing when the meeting room is also your living room is something else entirely. We have learned that productive disagreement is not about volume or victory. It is about listening, challenging respectfully and remembering you are on the same side.
The best managers encourage healthy disagreement. It builds stronger decisions, better processes and a more resilient culture.
What all of this means for your workplace in 2026
The truth is that most HR issues do not start as HR issues. They start as tiny moments of unclear expectations, rushed decisions, crossed wires or unspoken frustrations. It is the same in relationships. The difference is that in a business the consequences can become expensive very quickly.
If this year you want to support your managers, protect your business and build a calmer, more confident culture, think about the foundations:
- Are conversations happening early enough?
- Are boundaries and expectations clear?
- Do people know what their role really involves?
- Is performance addressed before it affects the team?
- Are you set up to bring new people in properly?
- Do you have someone to talk through tricky situations before they escalate?
This is exactly where strategic HR support changes everything. For some businesses that means working with us as their HR Director through the Full Works package. For others it means starting with the essentials like getting the right contract and onboarding in place so their next hire begins on solid ground.
Starting the year as you mean to go on
Working with your other half teaches you the wonderful truth that people are messy, relationships are complex and communication is your closest friend. Those lessons carry into every business, every team and every leadership decision.
If you want 2026 to feel clearer, calmer and more human, the place to start is with simple intentions. Speak openly. Set boundaries. Value strengths. And seek support before the weight of it all lands on your shoulders.
Here is to a year of better conversations, stronger relationships and workplaces that feel just a little more like teams and a little less like battlefields.
